Lillian D. Wald

Wald, Lillian D. (1867-1940), American nurse and social worker, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and trained as a nurse at New York Hospital in New York City. In 1893 she founded the Henry Street Settlement for social work, which she later expanded to include a public-health nursing center. She took a leading part in promoting the establishment of the U.S. Children's Bureau in 1912. Wald was the author of The House on Henry Street (1915).
