Mary Edwards Walker
Walker, Mary Edwards (1832-1919), American physician and feminist, born in Oswego, New York, and educated at Syracuse Medical College. During the American Civil War she was commissioned as an assistant surgeon in the Union army, becoming the first woman to hold such a commission. She was later decorated for services performed on the field. Subsequently she practiced medicine in Washington, D.C. Walker was a lifelong advocate of woman suffrage, dress reform, and the abolition of capital punishment.
